On 11th December, 2009 the world of Stu Timms was shattered. On that day he went to Perth’s Scarborough Beach with his mate Lindsay. They ran into the water together and dived into the surf side by side. Unbelievably, Stu hit his head on a sandbar. He remembers being underwater and unable to move. He remembers seeing feet and the water entering his lungs. Incredibly quick thinking by Lindsay got him out of the water and back to life. Stu has a spinal crush fracture at C5 level. He is paralysed from the shoulders. An amazingly fit, active young man is now lying helplessly in the Royal Perth Hospital, unable to do little more than breathe. Stu grew up in Bendigo, Victoria, he was passionate about any sport that took his eye. He was his age group Captain in Bendigo Regional soccer, he represented Bendigo in athletics. He grew into a fanatical BMX rider, enjoying the challenge and grit of street riding. Stu moved to Perth in October, 2009 , shared a house near the beach and got a job. Life could not be better. Stu’s injury has shaken everyone who knows him. The level of support is overwhelming, thus the website. We promise to keep you updated as often as possible. We are now trying to rebuild his life, step by tiny step. The first worries of immediate lung infection, heart and blood pressure instability are now past. He has a “halo” screwed onto his skull with 2kg traction. He is on his back with a major effort by the tireless hospital staff each time he is moved, even by millimetres. One can only imagine the nightmare of being trapped in such a situation. Our community is trying to salvage as much life and dignity for Stu as life and technology provides. We aim to give Stu independence and rekindle the embers of his dreams. Stu wanted to open a store in Perth specialising in all things BMX: bikes, parts, clothing and accessories. At present a distant dream. The only way Stu can now survive is through modern technology. Every single item of the latest technology costs money, big money. An electric wheelchair, vehicle, house alterations and a computer are just the start. Even the basics such as personal hygiene and independent feeding are impossible at present. A Trust Account has been opened to collect funds to purchase the things necessary for Stu to rebuild his life. The Account is with the Bendigo Bank. Donations can be made at any Bendigo Bank Branch or through your internet bank. The details are: BSB 633-000 Account No. 138858121 Bendigo was his home town, Perth is his adopted home, The World can help to get Stu back to life.
